TREASURING: Memories of Gorongosa National Park
Objective:
The TREASURING project - ENVIRONMENTAL, HISTORICAL AND SOCIAL DIMENSIONS OF NATURE CONSERVATION IN GORONGOSA NATIONAL PARK: IMPLICATIONS FOR SAFEGUARDING BIODIVERSITY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT - aims to value the natural and cultural historical heritage associated with Gorongosa National Park. This involves the training and capacity building of technicians and local communities, reinforcing their role in the conservation, benefits, and sustainable uses of environmental resources, using a methodological approach based on transdisciplinary scientific research with a strong communication and dissemination component.
Community involvement and recognition of their traditional knowledge about nature, landscapes, and biodiversity are crucial for the management of the Gorongosa National Park. Oral history and community engagement are powerful tools for incorporating narratives into natural parks and their local communities, allowing for clearer and more participatory conservation and heritage-making processes, taking collective memory into account. Simultaneously, these tools make it possible to complement official and institutional documentation, broadening the scope of understanding of the issues raised. These cross-cutting mediation strategies between policymakers, scientists, managers, facilitators, and local communities represent progress in promoting sustainable development.
The TREASURING project is promoted by the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE-UC), comprising HTC-CFE/NOVA-FCSH, the Memory for All® program, and the UNESCO Chair in Biodiversity and Conservation for Sustainable Development, and funded by Camões, Institute for Cooperation and Language, in partnership with Gorongosa National Park.
The interviews were conducted in Portuguese.
